Discovering Pollino National Park and the natural beauty of Calabria along the Ciclovia dei Parchi
The region of Calabria, the toe of Italy’s boot, is a land of dramatic contrasts and timeless beauty. Known in antiquity as Bruttium, this rugged and remote region has long been a crossroads of civilizations, from the ancient Greeks to the Byzantines. Today, Calabria remains one of Italy’s most unspoiled regions, offering travelers a rich tapestry of history, culture, and nature.
Calabria’s true hidden gem, however, lies deep within its mountainous heart: the Ciclovia dei Parchi della Calabria. This extraordinary cycling route stretches for over 500 kilometers, connecting four of the region’s national and regional parks – the Pollino, Sila, Serre, and Aspromonte – and showcasing the wild soul of southern Italy.
Starting in the Pollino National Park, Italy’s largest, you’ll encounter dramatic peaks, deep canyons, and high-altitude plateaus dotted with rare Bosnian pines. The landscape here is raw and untamed, and the roads winding through these ancient mountains are quiet and immersive – a haven for cyclists seeking solitude and adventure.
From there, the route leads you to the Sila plateau, once described by Norman Douglas as “a country of great silences and great forests.” This is the green lung of Calabria, with its vast woodlands, tranquil lakes, and open meadows. As you pedal along scenic trails and narrow country roads, you’ll pass traditional mountain villages where artisan cheese-making and woodcraft still thrive, and where time appears to slow to a gentle rhythm.
Further south, the Serre Calabresi offer a more intimate and misty terrain – a land of waterfalls, chestnut groves, and spiritual sanctuaries nestled in the forest. The cycling path here winds between sleepy hamlets and ancient monasteries, offering a quiet charm and a deep sense of connection with the land.
The final leg of your journey brings you into the Aspromonte National Park, a majestic range rising steeply from the sea. Here, the landscapes are both harsh and breathtaking, with panoramic views stretching to Sicily on clear days. Rich in biodiversity and peppered with small villages clinging to cliffsides, Aspromonte tells stories of resilience and ancient traditions.
Eventually, your wheels will roll down toward the city of Lamezia Terme, where the mountains begin to soften and give way to the coastal plain. Known for its thermal springs, historical districts, and central train station connecting much of southern Italy, Lamezia marks a symbolic return to modernity. After days immersed in the silence of forests and the solitude of peaks, the city offers both a welcome rest and a moment to reflect on all that has passed.
In Calabria, the Ciclovia is more than just a route – it’s a journey through a land that remains untouched by mass tourism, a place where the spirit of the past is very much alive, and where every bend in the road reveals a new wonder. And in Lamezia Terme, this remarkable path finds its conclusion — not with an ending, but with the quiet arrival into a land that invites you to stay just a little longer.
Please note: this is a moderate tour, suitable for all those who have some experience of bicycle touring and are in a good general physical condition. Some of the inland stretches haver some steeper climbs.
Average cycling times: approx.. 3-5 hours each day.
