Day 1
Arrival in Naples. You are met by a taxi (optional) and brought to your quiet agriturismo in the charming little village of Bomerano, beautifully located, high above the Amalfi Coast, overlooking the Bay of Salerno. If you arrive early you can walk a short stretch of the world-famous ‘Footpath of the Gods’, to take in the first spectacular views.

Day 2
Today’s walk brings you towards the highest peaks of the Amalfi Coast, from where views are perhaps even more beautiful than from the famed ‘Sentiero degli Dei’. The first part of the walk is a relaxed stroll through the charming village of Bomerano, but then, through vineyards and chestnut forest, the path starts to climb. After about an hour walking uphill you reach the ridge of the Monte Tre Calli, from where views are at 360 degrees. Along the ridge you then walk to a natural rock formation known as the ‘mushroom’, from where you have to face a choice: you might continue the climb to the Monte Sant’Angelo, otherwise  you can opt for a relaxed picnic lunch. Then you start the descend then towards the little chapel of the ‘Virgin of the Silence’, from where views on Positano are grand to say the least. Along an easy road you then walk back from there to your agriturismo.
Agriturismo*** – Bomerano
Distance: 11,5 km. Approx. 5-6 h. walking. Height gain and loss: 500 m. (several extensions possible)

Day 3
From Bomerano you walk down into the green Praia valley, a wonderful landscape of sheer mountain cliffs and terraced vineyards. Along recently restored footpaths you reach the grotto of St. Barbara, where some medieval fresco’s can still be found. Then, along the chapel of St. Alfonso you reach the small hamlet of Furore. The route then descends into the spectacular fjord of Furore, with its towering limestone cliffs. You reach the village of San Lazzaro, where you can enjoy a coffee or a drink, and admire one of the most wonderful panoramas of the whole Amalfi Coast. From here you continue your walk downhill, now along one of the oldest pathways of the Amalfi Maritime Republic, the ‘Maestra dei Villaggi’, or ‘Highway of the Villages’, an old paved mule track dating back to the 9th century. You pass the hamlet of Tovere, pass above the imposing monastery of Santa Rosa and then reach the small hamlet village of Vettica Minore. From here you have the option to either continue on foot to Amalfi, passing through the medieval villages of Lone and Pastena, both beautifully located above the rocky shore, or to walk down to the beach at Santa Croce and then make the short transfer to Amalfi by local boat.

Day 4
Today you can either walk or take the local bus, to the charming historic village of Ravello, another highlight of the Amalfi Coast. We recommend to walk the first very scenic stretch to the beautiful little town of Atrani, with great views on the town centre. Atrani is probably the best-preserved town on the Amalfi Coast, with narrow little streets and serene town square. Then you can follow the ‘Valley of the Dragon’ up to Ravello. The French novelist, André Gide, once described the town as being ‘closer to the sky than the seashore’, and indeed you’ll have to climb some stairs. Ravello is still one of the most exclusive villages of the Amalfi Coast, and boasts two magnificent villas – the superb 11th century Villa Rufolo, once a papal residence and later, the home of Wagner, and Villa Cimbrone, a sumptuous 19th century mansion with fabulous gardens and unequalled views over the Gulf of Salerno. It has been a sought after place by artists over the centuries, as its lofty position and sunny, dry climate made it an appealing place to writers, artists, musicians and travellers from northern Europe. Boccaccio, DH Lawrence and Richard Wagner are among the more notable guests who have succumbed to its spells. You can take your time to your time to stroll through the village, before walking back down to the coast, along the dramatically located Villa Cimbrone and the hamlet of Castiglione. You walk through the vineyards and lemon groves, back to the beautiful little town of Atrani. Now take your time to look around the narrow white little streets of the town centre and perhaps have a drink on the square. The last short stretch to Amalfi is very scenic and has many beautiful viewpoints.

Optional extra day
First you can take the local bus to Scala (or opt to walk there), the oldest historic village of the Amalfi Coast. Here you should of course visit the beautiful Duomo. Then you walk up to the hamlet of Campidoglio, from where a comfortable path leads into the Valle delle Ferriere, one of southern Italy’s most beautiful nature reserves. You will see some spectacular scenery, walking over comfortable footpaths underneath the towering cliffs, and passing close to some little waterfalls. Then through the forest, you descend to the little village of Pogerola, dominating the valley of Amalfi from the west. From here you take a beautiful medieval Staircase, which also offers nice views over the valley, down to the centre of Amalfi.

Day 5
Today you make a first easy walk, which gives you immediately a good idea of the amazing cultural and natural heritage of the Amalfi Coast. First you walk into the quiet little back alleys of Amalfi, where you still notice the strong Moorish influence. An ancient staircase takes you up underneath the impressive limestone cliffs, towards the little village of Pontone, part of the medieval defence system of the city of Amalfi. The main point of interest is the marvellous Torre dello Zirro, located on a narrow ridge, in a park like landscape, with unforgettable views of Amalfi to the one and Atrani to the other side. This area offers also a number of marvellous picnic places, all with dramatic views. Then, through the charming village of Pontone itself, you walk into the ‘Valle dei Mulini’, the valley of the watermills, with the ruins of Europe’s most ancient paper mills, dating back to the 11th century.  The comfortable footpath runs along the river course, in an abundant green, almost un-Italian, landscape. Those who want can penetrate deep into the valley, through spectacular scenery, underneath the towering cliffs, through an almost fairy tale like landscape. Here you can admire a number of beautiful waterfalls. Then you return back down to Amalfi, along a beautiful medieval mule track. The path gradually descends along a number of impressive ruins of what once were paper mills, adding a mysterious touch to the landscape. Along the last stretch the scenery changes to lemon groves and maquis. Back down in Amalfi you can pass at the paper museum, before returning to your hotel. As the walk is relatively short you now still have some time to wander around in Amalfi or take your time for a swim.

Day 6
From Amalfi you take a local bus to the monastery of Santa Rosa, a very scenic drive, which saves you a 300 m. climb uphill / ascend! (there is also the possibility to walk here, partly along the ‘Maestra dei Villaggi’). The walk from here first goes to the charming little village of Conca dei Marini, from where you’ll have wonderful views both on Amalfi and towards the western tip of the peninsula. The route descends to the coast again, and follows the coastline along some charming churches beautifully located above the rocky shore. You now descend into the lower part of the spectacular fjord of Furore, with its charming fishing village underneath the towering limestone cliffs. From here you walk along the church of Sant’Elia into the Valley of Praia, and then to the coastal town Praiano, with an optional descent to the very picturesque inlet of Marina di Praia, the old little harbour of Praiano.

Optional extra day
From your hotel you walk through the little streets of Praiano, up towards the little church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli. From here on a comfortable path above the village itself, you walk into the Valley of Praia, a beautiful green valley with many vineyards clinged to the cliffs. You then climb up to the little church of Sant’Alfonso and from here the very scenic caves of Santa Barbara: another short section uphill brings you to the beginning of the famous ‘Sentiero degli Dei’ (Footpath of the Gods), a walk with unrivalled views. After a very panoramic stretch with views over the whole Amalfi Coast, reaching out until the island of Capri, you start the descend back to Praiano again, passing over a centuries old staircase. For those who still have some energy a descend to the little inlet ‘Cavitella’ is highly recommended.

Day 7
You start your walk in the picturesque white washed alleys of Praiano. Then, along a medieval pilgrims’ route you walk uphill towards the monastery of San Domenico, set in a stupendous scenery, dominating the coast from its hilltop. Here you can have a little rest before continuing the climb uphill, through spectacular scenery with bizarre rock formations and luxurious vegetation. Shortly you then reach one of Italy’s most famous footpaths, the ‘Sentiero degli Dei’, or ‘Footpath of the Gods’. This path really lives up to its name! Through unique scenery with unrivalled views you reach the hamlet of Nocelle. Passing another spectacular valley you arrive in the little village of Montepertuso. After Montepertuso it’s only a short walk downstairs to Positano itself, one of the most charming villages of the Coast. There is ample to explore or perhaps a swim, before you return by local bus to Praiano, a short, but very scenic drive.

Day 8
After breakfast you return by boat or bus and train to Naples and by shuttle bus to the airport. An extra night in a hotel can be booked upon request.

N.B. It is possible to extend this tour with 2 days in Positano and/or two days in Capri (see tour details). On request it is also possible to book a night in Positano’s only ‘mountain hut’.

All nights are spent in beautiful, welcoming farm houses (‘agriturismo’), or in small characteristic family-run hotels (generally 3-star). All rooms have en-suite facilities.

Accommodation is on B&B basis, in all accommodations. So no evening meals are included, and you are free to choose from the wide choice of restaurants in the area. Your accommodation holder can give you good tips. On some occasions you can also choose to eat at the premises of the hotel.

No picnic lunches are included in the tour price, but these can be prepared for you by the accommodation holders, or materials for picnics can be purchased in the villages where you stay. On some occasions you have the option to have your lunch in a restaurant along the way.

Night 1 & 2: The first two nights are spent in the small village of Bomerano, on the high plain of Agerola, overlooking the Amalfi Coast, either in a beautiful agriturismo, or at ‘family houses’, all with comfortable rooms with en-suite facilities.

Nights 3, 4 & 5: These are spent at Amalfi, the ancient capital of the Amalfi Coast, in a welcoming and comfortable 3-star hotel, recently renovated, or in a small charming family run hotel right on the (private) beach. All hotels are centrally located at walking distance from the seashore and all main monuments of the medieval town centre.

Nights 6 & 7: The last nights you stay in the little town of Praiano, in a good 3-star hotel, with a few nice little beaches at walking distance. For those who want to relax a day longer, there’s the possibility to stay longer.

LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY

Moderately easy (2-3): Mostly easy walks, but with nonetheless some walking uphill, sometimes on paths with rough surfaces. On some days extensions or shortcuts are possible.

Fitness: High standard of fitness is not necessary but clients should be able to walk for up to 5 hours a day in hot sun on dusty or stony tracks.

FOOT PATHS & WAYMARKING

Most paths are relatively well maintained, but during the season some paths can get overgrown (we are in continuous contact with local authorities to keep the paths clean – please help us by providing you feedback on the quality of the paths).

Waymarking: Only a small part of the route is waymarked (partly by us); elsewhere it is necessary to follow the route descriptions provided together with the maps. With these it is always possible to find your route. In case you don’t feel confident a local guide can be provided for some trails.

ARRIVAL & DEPARTURE

Arrival: The tour starts in BOMERANO (AGEROLA), connected with Naples by a frequent bus service. A taxi pick-up service can be arranged either from Naples (airport or train station), or from Pompeii or Castellammare di Stabia, which can both be easily reached from Naples, with the local Circumvesuviana train.

Departure: The tour ends after breakfast on day 11 in Praiano. A frequent bus service can bring you to either Sorrento or Amalfi/Salerno, from where you travel to your next destination (Naples, Salerno or Rome can all be easily reached). Several taxi services are available to bring you directly to your next destination.

EXTRA NIGHTS

It is possible to include extra nights in any of the accommodations en route. Descriptions for extra walks as well as sightseeing options will be provided !!!

At the beginning or end of the tour there is also an opportunity to visit Naples and/or Pompeii, or spend some time on the beach.

The tour can easily be extended with a few days in Positano or on the island of Capri (see TOUR VARIATIONS). Several good accommodations are available. Details and prices on request.

Day 9
First you take the local bus up to Montepertuso, from where you start a very scenic walk, around the upper valley of Positano. Following ancient footpaths through the forest and along marvelous viewpoints you climb up towards Santa Maria al Castello, the old fortress defending the narrow valley between the Amalfi- and Sorrento-side of the peninsula. From here you can admire both the Gulf of Salerno and the Bay of Naples. Through a nice wooded area in a park like landscape you then descend to the Caserma Forestale (the forestry service’s house). For those who want there is the possibility to climb up from here to the Monte Sant’Angelo, the highest mountain of the peninsula, a very demanding but rewarding ascent. The standard walk though continues through the forest and zigzags back down to Montepertuso. Along another medieval mule track you then return to Positano again.

Several hotels in Capri/Anacapri can be booked as an extension to your tour. There are direct boats from Amalfi/Positano to Capri. The program would then be as follows:

Today you travel by boat to the rightly famous island of Capri, the island where already the roman emperors liked to come as tourists, and that since then never lost its fame. Upon arrival in the harbour you leave your luggage to the ‘porters’ and start a beautiful roundwalk. Of course you do not only see the ‘touristy’ highlights, but you also walk along wonderful foot paths, passing the ruins of the island’s most impressive roman villa, an untouched coastline and many grotto’s. Along the world famous Via Krupp, you then descend to Marina Piccola, with perhaps the option for a swim, before settling in your hotel. This walk can be extended or shortened in many ways, according to your wish to dedicate to walking, relaxing or shopping. In the evening you’ll have the choice of many romantic restaurants in the village.

Day 9
The last walking day is dedicated to the less famous side of the island of Capri, the more rural and mountainous Anacapri. By chair lift (‘funicolare’) you travel up to the highest mountain of the island, the Mount Solaro (burt also walking is possible). From here you can enjoy marvellous views over the whole island, the Bay of Naples, the Bay of Salerno and the Amalfi Coast. Descending along the ridge you slowly walk down a great foot path to the light house at the very west end of the island. Here you can perhaps enjoy the clear sea water. The walk then continues along the coast, passing along a series of fortresses, partly built by the English troops to defend the island from the fleet of Napoleon, on recently restored. The walk ends at the world famous ‘Blue Grotto’ (the ‘Grotta Azzurra’), from where you travel back by bus to your hotel. Hotel *** – Capri.

You can take your time to your time to stroll through the village, before starting the walk back down to the coast. Along the dramatically located Villa Cimbrone and the hamlet of Castiglione you walk first through vineyards and lemon groves, then along a medieval flight of stairs down the beautiful little town of Atrani. This certainly is one of the best preserved villages of the coast, with the possibility to look around the narrow white little streets of the town centre. The last short stretch to Amalfi is very scenic and has beautiful viewpoints on the city centre. As the walk is relatively short you now still have some time to wander around in Amalfi or take your time for a swim.

An optional descent to the very picturesque inlet of Marina di Praia, the old little harbor of Praiano, is worth the effort!

In the late afternoon you return by boat to Positano, along the ‘Islands of the Sirens’.

EXTENSIONS

Possible extension n.° 1 : CAPRI

Several hotels in Capri/Anacapri can be booked as an extension to your tour. There are many direct boats and hydrofoils from Sorrento to Capri. The program would then be as follows:

Day 9
Today you travel by boat to the rightly famous island of Capri, the island where already the roman emperors liked to come as tourists, and that since then never lost its fame. Upon arrival in the harbour you leave your luggage to the ‘porters’ and start a beautiful roundwalk. Of course you do not only see the ‘touristy’ highlights, but you also walk along wonderful foot paths, passing the ruins of the island’s most impressive roman villa, an untouched coastline and many grotto’s. Along the world famous Via Krupp, you then descend to Marina Piccola, with perhaps the option for a swim, before settling in your hotel. This walk can be extended or shortened in many ways, according to your wish to dedicate to walking, relaxing or shopping. In the evening you’ll have the choice of many romantic restaurants in the village.

Day 10
The last walking day is dedicated to the less famous side of the island of Capri, the more rural and mountainous Anacapri. By chair lift (‘funicolare’) you travel up to the highest mountain of the island, the Mount Solaro (burt also walking is possible). From here you can enjoy marvellous views over the whole island, the Bay of Naples, the Bay of Salerno and the Amalfi Coast. Descending along the ridge you slowly walk down a great foot path to the light house at the very west end of the island. Here you can perhaps enjoy the clear sea water. The walk then continues along the coast, passing along a series of fortresses, partly built by the English troops to defend the island from the fleet of Napoleon, on recently restored. The walk ends at the world famous ‘Blue Grotto’ (the ‘Grotta Azzurra’), from where you travel back by bus to your hotel. Hotel *** – Capri.

Day 11
After breakfast you return by boat to Naples and by shuttle bus to the airport. An extra night in a hotel can be booked upon request.

Possible extension n.° 2 : CAPRI from SORRENTO

To visit Capri only briefly it is also possible to book an extra night in Sorrento. You can easily make a day-excursion to Capri, as there are many direct boats and hydrofoils from Sorrento.

Day 1
Arrival in Naples. By shuttle bus you drive to the harbour, for the short crossing to the picturesque island of Procida, probably the least known of the 3 big islands in the Bay of Naples. You are picked up from the harbour and settle in your hotel. Perhaps you have some time for a first stroll already, before going for dinner in one of the great (fish) restaurants of the island.

Day 2
After breakfast you start a beautiful round walk to discover this most authentic island of the Bay of Naples, with its colourful houses and idyllic fishing harbours. Procida is only a small island, and therefore it’s possible to ‘do’ the whole island in one day. You first pass through the narrow streets and walk up to the historical heart of the island, ‘Terra Murata’, or ‘walled land’, dominated by its castle, from where you’ll enjoy marvellous views. Then it brings you to one of the most picturesque spots of Italy, the small fishing harbour of Corricella. Its unique setting and coloured houses were used as movie set for “Il Postino”. Here you will need some time to look around and take pictures. Along the south-eastern coast you then continue the walk along the wooded headlands of Pizzico and Solchiaro. The walk ends at the charming small harbour of Chiaiolella, where you have time for a swim on the large sandy beach or drink a glass on one of its terraces, before returning to your hotel.  Those who still have energy can extend the walk and explore the small island of Vivara, linked to Procida by a small (pedestrian) bridge. This island, the ridge of an old volcano, is now a nature reserve and one of the last bits of unspoilt nature in the area. Walk through a timeless Mediterranean landscape, through green forests and with the blue sea all around.

Day 3
This morning you’ll have some more time to discover the northern side of the island, or in case you didn’t have the time yesterday, visit the small island of Vivara. Or just make a last stroll and have a drink at the colourful harbour! Then you are brought to the harbour to take the boat for the short crossing to the island of Ischia, known as the ‘Green Island’, the biggest island of the Bay of Naples. A taxi transfer to your hotel is organised for you, but we suggest to leave only your luggage to the taxi driver and wandering around a bit in Ischia Porto, and then do the short walk from the harbour to the castle where you sleep, through the pretty streets of the old town centre. The last short stretch in the fortified island itself is very scenic and has beautiful viewpoints on the city centre. You sleep in a beautiful hotel, inside the old medieval castle of Ischia, built on a rocky island off-shore, which certainly deserves to be explored as well. In the evening you can dine on some local fish specialty in the colourful harbour of Corricella or opt for a dinner with great views on the terrace of your hotel.

Day 4
From your hotel in the castle you walk down through the intriguing alleys of the fortified rock to the bridge which links the castle to the old town centre. From here you start a linear walk along the beautiful south coast of the island, through a spectacular landscape of terraced vineyards and fantastic lava sculptures, with unforgettable views over the Bay of Naples and Capri. The first part of the walk goes over the cliffs, through vineyards sculpted like Asian paddy fields and small hamlets. Then you pass the small hamlet of Testaccio, from where you descend to the large sandy beach of Marina dei Maronti. Just behind the beach there are several narrow canyons with thermal springs, known since Roman times. If you have time you can go for a dip! Along the beach you then walk to the charming fishing village of Sant’Angelo, from where you take the bus back to the hotel.

Distance: 8-15 km. Approx. 3-5 h. walking

Day 5
Today you’ll discover the mountains of the island, a chain of extinct volcano which occupy the whole central part of the island. First you gain some height by bus, your walk starts either in the hamlet of Fiaiano or in the small village of Fontana (several longer/shorter options possible), where you have the time for a coffee. From here you walk up to the Monte Epomeo, the highest mountain of the island, and then to the Capo dell’Uomo, Ischia’s second mountain. All this is along easy, comfortable paths. Through forested areas and vineyards, along rock dwelling of monks and hermits, and always with incredible views over the sea, you walking down to Ischia’s most western village, Forio. After a stroll through its pleasant town centre, you take the bus along the north coast back to Ischia Porto. If you still have some energy, you can make a short walk to one of the most interesting volcano’s of the island, the Fondo dell’Oglio.

Day 6
In the morning your taxi brings you to the harbour, where you take the boat to the rightly famous island of Capri, the island where already the roman emperors liked to come as tourists, and that since then never lost its fame (off season you travel through Naples). You settle in your hotel in the less touristy Anacapri, more rural and mountainous. By chair lift (‘funicolare’) you then travel up to the highest mountain of the island, the Mount Solaro, from where you can enjoy marvellous views over the island, the Bay of Naples, the Bay of Salerno and the Amalfi Coast. Descending along the ridge you slowly walk down to the light house at the very west end of the island, where you can perhaps enjoy the clear sea water. Day 7
The last walking day is dedicated to the more famous side of the island of Capri, to see the places that have inspired so many over the centuries, and have always attracted the global jet set. Of course you do not only see the ‘touristy’ highlights, but you also make a beautiful round walk along the almost pristine South Coast. First you pass the ‘Piazzetta’ and the charming backstreets of Capri, with their clear Moresque influence, then you walk up to the ruins of one of the most impressive roman villa’s of the area, and moreover in an exceptional location, the Villa Iovis, with world class views. On your way up you also pass the exceptional Villa Lysis, rather unknown, but one of the best spots of Capri ! Descending towards the untouched coastline of the southern part of the island, you come along the Arco Naturale, the natural bridge, many grotto’s and finally the famous Faraglioni, three uninhabited small islands, just of the South coast. Through the Gardens of August and the impressive Via Krupp, perhaps the world’s most beautiful pedestrian way, you descend to the charming Marina Piccola, from where you travel back by local bus to your hotel. T his walk can be extended or shortened in many ways, according to your wish to dedicate to walking, relaxing or shopping.

Day 8
After breakfast you return by boat to Naples and by shuttle bus to the airport. Extra nights can be booked in a hotel in the city centre or in any other place (upon request).

ACCOMMODATION & MEALS

Accommodation is mostly bed and breakfast basis (on one day an evening meal is included – see inclusions) in very good 3-star hotels. All rooms have en-suite facilities.

When dinners are not included, you will be free to organise your dinner. You can either eat at the premises of the hotel (recommended in Ischia !) or choose from the wide choice of restaurants in the area. Your accommodation holder can give you good tips.

No picnic lunches are included in the tour price, but these can be prepared for you by the accommodation holders, or materials for picnics can be purchased in the villages where you stay.Nights 1 & 2: The first nights you stay on the idyllic island of Procida, according to your choice in a nice 3-star hotel with a big garden, or a beautiful 4-star hotel in the historical centre.

Night 3, 4 & 5: You stay in an exclusive hotel in the ancient monastery of Ischia, located on its ‘Rocca’, a small rocky island linked to the main island by a bridge. A wonderful and quiet setting, yet at walking distance from the town centre with its many bars and restaurants and attached to the Aragonese castle.

Night 6 & 7: The last nights are spent in a beautiful and comfortable 3-star hotel, the ex-residence of the Queen of Sweden. It is located in a stunning botanical setting of various exotic plants and trees such as palms, pines, mangroves and ficus, with a sunny exposure and gentle sea breeze!

LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY

Moderately easy (2): Mostly easy walks, but with nonetheless some walking uphill, sometimes on paths with rough surfaces. On some days some stretches are difficult for those suffering from vertigo (but NOT dangerous !). On these days alternative options are available. Extensions or shortcuts are also possible on many days.

Fitness: High standard of fitness is not necessary but you should be able to walk for up to 5 hours a day in hot sun on dusty or stony tracks.

FOOT PATHS & WAYMARKING

Most paths are well maintained, but during the season some paths can get overgrown (we are in continuous contact with local authorities to keep the paths clean – please help us by providing you feedback on the quality of the paths). Both on Procida and on Capri, many parts of the route that you follow are paved (pedestrian) alleyways.

Waymarking: Only a small part of the route is waymarked; elsewhere it is necessary to follow the route descriptions provided together with the maps. With these it is always possible to find your route. In case you don’t feel confident a local guide can be provided for some trails.

Departure: The tour ends after breakfast on day 8 in CAPRI. A short transfer brings you to the harbour (included), from where you travel back by boat to Naples (or in case you extend your holiday to Sorrento or Salerno).

Day 1
Arrival at Paestum by train and reach the hotel, located only a few hundred meters from the temples area, which are amongst the best preserved in Europe. Leave your luggage in the hotel and take your time to pay a visit to the archaeological site with its amazing Greek temples and the museum. Then walk back to the hotel to enjoy a typical dinner of local cuisine.

Day 2
Today you first make a short train ride to Agropoli, from where you start a wonderful walk along the headland of Punta Tresino, one of the last remaining stretches of pristine coast. You walk through a genuine Mediterranean landscape, through forests and scrubland, along wonderful beaches and an ancient roman harbour, with beautiful views over the sea. You reach the abandoned village of San Giovanni, where still some very good white wine is being produced (optional tasting possible). Then you descend to the large sandy beach of Castellabate. It’s worth it to continue the walk along the beach until you reach the charming little fishing harbour of Santa Maria. From here you are being picked up – perhaps after a swim and a nice gelato on the beach, and you are brought to your charming hotel in the fortified village of Rocca Cilento.

Day 3
From Rocca Cilento you make a circular walk today. This walk brings you along some of the most interesting villages in the area and into the so-called ‘Valle dei Mulini’ (the Valley of the mills). Part of the walks follows the old route that used to connect this valley to the Greek cities of Paestum and Velia. First you walk down along the ridge, with wonderful views to both sides, to the tiny village of Lustra, with its very well preserved medieval town centre. Then you start to descend into the Valley of the mills, along a beautiful recently restored footpath. Here you’ll notice the remains of at least 17 mills! These are spread along the course of the stream which, though being short, had enough water to supply all these mills before flowing into the Fiumara river, which you’ll cross. Then you’ll climb up to the charming little hamlet of Valle Cilento, with its beautiful bell towers. The path then descends into the valley again and passes along the intriguing abandoned village of Massacanina. A short but steep climb leads you onto the ridge again and past the monastery of Mercato Cilento you take a panoramic dirt road, which will then lead you back to Rocca Cilento, dominated by its fine castle, from where views over the area are unrivalled. Take some time to relax on your panoramic terrace before your dinner based on local specialties.

Day 4
Today you will make a very panoramic walk along the ridge of Mt. Stella, which still is the geographical and cultural centre of the area, surrounded by a ring of charming medieval villages. A short transfer brings you to Perdifumo, where you start the walk in the chestnut forest. Once you reach the ridge, views range from the island of Capri and the Amalfi Coast, to Capo Palinuro and sometimes even the island of Stromboli in Sicily! Part of the walk leads through the maquis and bare rocks, part through thick chestnut forests. You pass the historical ‘Castelluccio’, an abandoned fortress, probably dating back to the pre-Roman period. Then, still following the ridge, you reach the chapel of the Virgin of Mount Stella, spiritual centre of the area, and still worshipped. Then you make a long descend towards the coast, and you’ll pass through several beautiful historic villages. The first one is the tiny medieval Galdo. Follow Celso, Pollica and Cannicchio, all beautifully located on the hills, with a charming medieval centre, and nice views over the sea. Then it goes down to Acciaroli, a characteristic fishing village, with a beautiful sandy beach, one of Earnest Hemingway’s favourite places. Here you can enjoy a swim before you take the public bus to the small village of San Marco di Castellabate, where you stay in a comfortable family- run hotel. Dinner is in the hotel tonight.

Day 5
Directly from the hotel you start a circular walk passing through typical Mediterranean maquis into the area of Monte Licosa. The headland of Licosa is the point where Cilento mostly reaches out to sea, like a miniature reproduction of Monte Stella peninsula. It is full of marine charm, a place where the sea-breeze makes the trees ‘dance’, bound to Ulysses’ myth: people say that the siren Leucosia drowned herself here for the sake of Ulysses.
This myth and the marvellous landscape make this area a really enchanting place to visit in every season of the year. In wintertime the clear sky offers you superb views over the Amalfi Coast and Palinuro, in springtime the flowering brooms cover the hill with golden yellow and during the summer you can swim in a very clean sea. In autumn the sea-temperature is still warm and on clear days you can take relaxing walks. You first walk up through the pine forest, until you come to the ridge. Along the ridge there are several watchtowers, from where you can observe the whole area, both the coast and inland. With a bit of luck you might be able to have superb views over the whole bay of Salerno and even Calabria! Through a pleasant agricultural landscape you descend to the coast at Ogliastro Marina, and from here you follow a coastal trail to the very point of the headland. Also here along the coast you see the ruins of several watchtowers and you will be caught by the magic of the dancing trees.
Of course there are several possibilities for a swim. From Punta Licosa you then continue along the coast, and a beautiful path brings you back to the nice harbour of San Marco. In the evening you are free to arrange your own dinner from a wide choice of restaurants in the near surroundings.

Day 6
From San Marco a short private transfer brings you to the Agropoli railway station, from where you take the train to Pisciotta (1 hour journey). There you are met by your taxi for a short transfer to Palinuro, where you can already make a nice roundwalk on the mythical headland, named after one of the mates of Aeneas.
From Palinuro you can then make a beautiful walk, which climbs gently up into the first hills above the coast between Palinuro and Marina di Camerota, with great views over the blue Mediterranean. You’ll walk along the ruins of old farmsteads and along the chapel of Sant’Iconio, through forest and Mediterranean scrubland, before descending to the charming village of  Marina di Camerota, with its clear South American influence. The last stretch is along the coast and several nice beaches, so perhaps there is the option for a swim. Tonight you stay in a nice hotel in the village centre, with a swimming pool, but also at only a few hundred metres from a crystal clear sea. You’ll enjoy dinner in the nice garden.

Day 7
Today you’ll enjoy a coastal walk along one of the most unspoilt stretches of coastline in southern Italy, with the cleanest seawater (Blue Flag). This is the so-called Costa degli Infreschi, named after the Roman harbour of Porto degli Infreschi, where there is a freshwater spring in a grotto. Easy and absolutely superb sightseeing on the ancient footpath which connects the village of Camerota to the ancient Roman harbour. The walk starts directly from your hotel in Marina di Camerota. First you walk along its harbour then along a series of grottos and beaches you reach the first medieval watchtower. Now you have to climb a short stretch and continue through olive groves and scrubland. Then you descend to a next little inlet, which reminds the desolate beaches of a tropical island. Another hour along a beautiful trail brings you to the Porto degli Infreschi. Upon arrival on the beach here a lunch can be cooked by local fishermen(optional). Return either on foot or by boat (optional) to Marina di Camerota. In the evening you are free to arrange your own dinner.

Day 8
After breakfast you are brought to the train station. From here you return by train to Naples (centre or airport), Salerno or Rome.

Night 4 & 5: For two nights you stay in the small coastal village town of San Marco, at the south side of a large sandy beach, and at the edge of the beautiful promontory of Punta Licosa.

Night 6 & 7: The last nights are spent in a comfortable ‘B&B’, or good 3-star hotel in the small coastal town of Marina di Camerota, gateway to the unspoilt ‘Costa degli Infreschi’.

Day 1
Arrival in Levanto. After settling in your hotel there is time for a short visit to the town centre and maybe a swim to wash off the tiredness of the journey.
Total walking time: around 1 hour + sightseeing time

Day 2
The first day walk takes you along the coast to Monterosso al Mare. The first part of the walk leads up towards Punta Mesco, the most notable promontory in the region. This is a good spot to stop for a picnic lunch. Just short of the point you can make a small detour to the ruins of an old 11th century hermitage and the nearby ‘semaforo’, from where you will enjoy marvellous views of the rugged coastline. Then you follow a fairly steep path down into Monterosso, a colourful village, with blue, red & yellow houses that cluster behind the beachfront. There is then time to explore the town before taking the local train back to Levanto. For those who want there is also the option to walk back from here, following a more inland forested path, which over the ridge brings us back behind the castle of Levanto.
Total walking time: around 3,5 hours + sightseeing time (4-5 hours with extra option).

Day 3
From Levanto you walk in western direction today. The first part of the walk goes along the beach, then the path goes up into the first hills and down to the little seaside village of Bonassola. Then it goes through the seaside hills towards the small ‘village’ of Framura, an aggregation of scattered hamlets on the hillside. From Costa, the highest hamlet, an almost level path contours the hills, with nice views over the sea. A steep descend brings you down to the next resort, Deiva Marina (with the option to continue to Moneglia or even Sestri Levante). This walk along the coast brings you through several charming little villages, where you have the time to drink a coffee or just relax. Also do you have the possibility to have lunch there. From all the villages on the way you can take the train back to Levanto, in case you want to shorten the walk.

Day 4
You first take the train to Riomaggiore, the most southerly of the five villages, where you can already leave your luggage in the hotel. Then you start the most ‘classical’ of all walks in the Cinque Terre: the walk along the famous ‘Sentiero del’Amore’ (‘Lover’s Walk’) to Manarola, an attractive little village with steep multi-coloured houses overlooking a rocky port. Then head up the 365 steps to Corniglia, perched on a ridge overlooking the sea. From there you continue through terraced vineyards and the occasional citrus grove. As you approach Vernazza, dominated by its old fortress, you enjoy some of the best views in the region. You contour around the hillsides following a narrow track that leads us up and down, before a fairly steep descent brings us into the village itself. In Vernazza, arguably the prettiest of all the villages, there is time to ascend the castle tower for a stunning view of the port with its brightly painted boats. There are numerous cafés and bars where you can enjoy refreshment before taking the train back to your hotel.

Day 5
Today’s walk takes you into the inland of the Cinque Terre, to the churches of Madonna di Reggio and Madonna di Saviore. You first take the train to Vernazza and then walk along the coast to Monterosso, approaching this beautiful little town from the other end. After a coffee break you start climbing up to the sanctuary of Madonna di Saviore. Here you can eat something or relax for a while, before walking on to the next sanctuary, that of Madonna di Reggio. Then the walk continues more or less along the contour lines; through the hills you walk to the little church of San Bernardo, with beautiful views over the coast, and from there you descend down to the coast at Vernazza again. A shorter option takes you directly from Madonna di Reggio, along a number of little chapels, back down to Vernazza.
Total walking time: around 4,5 hours + sightseeing time.

Day 6
Today you walk in eastern direction. From Riomaggiore, you commence your walk to Campiglia and Portovenere. You hike up a long flight of stairs to the Santuario della Madonna di Montenero. Continuing uphill you begin contouring along the coastal cliffs, through terraced vineyards, enjoying wonderful views of the coastline framed by clear blue waters. You are now on the ‘Sentiero Rosso’, the ridge-top traverse that goes from one end of the Cinque Terre to the other. You pass through the little hamlet of Campiglia where you can stop for some refreshment. Walking down into the pine forest, the track narrows as you continue towards Portovenere with further spectacular views. Arriving at the 16th century castle above the village, you may be able to see the distant peaks of the Alpi Apuane before a long staircase takes us into the heart of the village. There is time to visit the charming village and Punta San Pietro, before returning to Riomaggiore by boat.

Day 7
End of the tour.

ACCOMMODATION & MEALS

All nights are spent in beautiful, characteristic family-run hotels (generally 3/4-star; 5-star on request). All rooms have en-suite facilities.

Accommodation is on B&B basis, in all accommodations. So no evening meals are included, and you are free to choose from the wide choice of restaurants in the area. Your accommodation holder can give you good tips. On some occasions you can also choose to eat at the premises of the hotel.

No picnic lunches are included in the tour price, but these can be prepared for you by the accommodation holders, or materials for picnics can be purchased in the villages where you stay. On some occasions you have the option to have your lunch in a restaurant along the way.

Nights 1, 2 & 3: These are spent at Levanto, a nice old medieval city; you’ll stay in a welcoming and comfortable 3 star hotel, centrally located at walking distance from all the main monuments of the medieval town centre.

Nights 4, 5 & 6: These three nights are spent in the lively little village of Riomaggiore, the most eastern of the five villages, with colourful houses and a charming little harbour.

UPGRADE/CHANGES IN ACCOMODATION:
It is possible to do this tour, staying in more luxurious 4-star hotels. Accommodation in Monterosso – the biggest village of the Cinque Terre – is also available, either to substitute the days in Levanto, or those in Riomaggiore.

LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY

Moderately easy (2-3): Mostly easy walks, on well maintained paths, but with nonetheless some walking uphill, sometimes on paths with rough surfaces. On some days extensions or shortcuts are possible.

Fitness: High standard of fitness is not necessary but clients should be able to walk for up to 5 hours a day in hot sun on dusty or stony tracks.

FOOT PATHS & WAYMARKING

Most paths are relatively well maintained, but during the season some paths can get overgrown (we are in continuous contact with local authorities to keep the paths clean – please help us by providing you feedback on the quality of the paths).

Waymarking: A large part of the route is waymarked (mainly by the parks); elsewhere it is necessary to follow the route descriptions provided together with the maps. With these it is always possible to find your route.

Arrival: The tour starts in LEVENTO. There are frequent trains from all directions. There is the possibility to park a car here (about € 12,00 /day).

Departure: The tour ends after breakfast on day 9 in Camogli. The return is most easily made by train. Back to Levanto is 30 minutes by train.

N.B. Please note that there is no (cheap) parking space anywhere on the Cinque Terre except for Levanto!

At the beginning or the end of the tour there is also an opportunity to visit Genova and/or Pisa / Florence, or spend some time on the beach, somewhere in Liguria. Day 1
Arrival in Levanto. After settling in your hotel there is time for a short visit to the town centre and maybe a swim to wash off the tiredness of the journey.
Total walking time: around 1 hour + sightseeing time

Day 2
The first day walk takes you along the coast to Monterosso al Mare. The first part of the walk leads up towards Punta Mesco, the most notable promontory in the region. This is a good spot to stop for a picnic lunch. Just short of the point you can make a small detour to the ruins of an old 11th century hermitage and the nearby ‘semaforo’, from where you will enjoy marvellous views of the rugged coastline. Then you follow a fairly steep path down into Monterosso, a colourful village, with blue, red & yellow houses that cluster behind the beachfront. There is then time to explore the town before taking the local train back to Levanto. For those who want there is also the option to walk back from here, following a more inland forested path, which over the ridge brings us back behind the castle of Levanto.
Total walking time: around 3,5 hours + sightseeing time (4-5 hours with extra option).

Day 3
From Levanto you walk in western direction today. The first part of the walk goes along the beach, then the path goes up into the first hills and down to the little seaside village of Bonassola. Then it goes through the seaside hills towards the small ‘village’ of Framura, an aggregation of scattered hamlets on the hillside. From Costa, the highest hamlet, an almost level path contours the hills, with nice views over the sea. A steep descend brings you down to the next resort, Deiva Marina (with the option to continue to Moneglia or even Sestri Levante). This walk along the coast brings you through several charming little villages, where you have the time to drink a coffee or just relax. Also do you have the possibility to have lunch there. From all the villages on the way you can take the train back to Levanto, in case you want to shorten the walk.

Day 4
You first take the train to Riomaggiore, the most southerly of the five villages, where you can already leave your luggage in the hotel. Then you start the most ‘classical’ of all walks in the Cinque Terre: the walk along the famous ‘Sentiero del’Amore’ (‘Lover’s Walk’) to Manarola, an attractive little village with steep multi-coloured houses overlooking a rocky port. Then head up the 365 steps to Corniglia, perched on a ridge overlooking the sea. From there you continue through terraced vineyards and the occasional citrus grove. As you approach Vernazza, dominated by its old fortress, you enjoy some of the best views in the region. You contour around the hillsides following a narrow track that leads us up and down, before a fairly steep descent brings us into the village itself. From Riomaggiore you take the train to Camogli, where you leave the luggage in your hotel. Then you start the first walk on the Peninsula of Portofino, towards the beautifully located monastery of San Fruttuoso, dating back to the 11th century and set in its own cove and reachable only by boat or on foot. The walk takes through forested areas, along the church of San Rocco and a number of impressive viewpoints. From San Fruttuoso there is the possibility to walk back or take the boat. In the afternoon take your time to explore the beautiful Camogli itself.
Total walking time: around 3,5 hours + sightseeing time (shorter option: 1,5 – 2,5 hours).

Day 8
You first make a short transfer by train to Santa Margherita, where you have some time to walk around this attractive town. From Santa Margherita, you then walk to Portofino, long a resort for the jet set, but apart from that a very attractive colourful village. Do visit its castle and light house, a spectacular viewpoint! If energy permits, you can continue along the trail, with splendid views across the Gulf of Genoa to the Abbey of San Fruttuoso, approaching this 11th century jewel from the other end.  You can choose to return by boat to Santa Margherita, or directly to Camogli.

Day 9
