Overview

Through the amazing nature and rural landscapes of genuine southern Italy

The region of Campania marks the real beginnings of southern Italy. It has been sought-after since Roman times when it was tagged the Campania Felix or ‘happy land’. Understandably when there is the great city of Naples, beautiful countryside, Roman sites, small islands and stretches of spectacular coast. On the southern side of the Sorrento Peninsula, the Costiera Amalfitana is probably one of Europe’s most well-known and dramatic stretches of coastline, with its towering cliffs and picturesque coves.

But Campania’s real secret is located South of Salerno, and immediately south of the wonderful Greek temples of Paestum. Here the coastline bulges out into an expanse of mountainous landmass known as the Cilento, now one of Italy’s biggest National Parks, with World Heritage listing.

This tour brings you into the real ‘Heart of the Cilento’, along the Calore river and up into the wild Cervati mountain range, and finally onto the impressive Alburni mountains. Inland the Cilento is largely undisturbed by the 21st century and you will encounter few other tourists along your way.

You will walk through pristine natural areas, like beech and oak forests and mountain meadows, beautiful river valleys, impressive canyons and great mountain scenery. But as well will you walk through attractive countryside, with vineyards and olive groves and all its cultural treasures like rural chapels, ancient farm houses, old water mills and charming medieval villages.

You’ll visit some of the nicest mediaeval villages of the area, where the traditional way of life is still evident. And you’ll enjoy visiting some of the Cilento’s greatest cultural treasures, like the rock churches of Magliano, St. Michael’s cave church in Sant’Angelo a Fasanella, the ruins of Roscigno Vecchia and the castles of Laurino and Sicignano. All linked together by a great walking route.

At the beginning or the end of the tour there is also an opportunity to visit Paestum or Pompeii, or spend some time on the beach. The tour can easily be combined with a possible journey along the coast of the Cilento or with a tour on the Amalfi Coast.

Please note: this is a moderately easy tour which is suitable for those who have some experience with walking and a good general physical condition. Most of the walks are on good paths, some of them just recently restored by the local authorities. Part of the paths is waymarked. Elsewhere it is necessary to follow the route notes provided together with the maps.

Average walking times: approx from 4 to 6 hours each day.

Day-to-Day

Day 1
Arrival by train in Capaccio / Paestum (which can easily be reached from Naples). You can visit the amazing Greek temples, before being transferred to your agriturismo in the green valley of the Calore River near Felitto (transfer service included). Those who come by car can leave their car here (a transfer service from the last accommodation back to here can be arranged).
Agriturismo *** Felitto – HB

Day 2
Today you make a circular walk, a good introduction of what the area has to offer: ranging from wild nature to hidden cultural treasures. First you walk (or be brought by car) to Felitto, towering high above the green canyon of the river Calore, one of the highlights of the Cilento National Park. An old path leads down to the river from here. First you walk along a beautiful path along the old aqueduct to a picnic area at a small artificial lake, and then you take a path which penetrates into the wildest part of the canyon, first through the maquis, then through the forest, into one of the most unspoilt areas of the Cilento National Park. The path has several amazing viewpoints overlooking the canyon. You come along caves (in one of which a hermit used to live) and the ruins of watermills. Vegetation is abundant and in the crystal clear water there are still otters and trout. Along the route there are several nice swimming spots. Then you arrive at a natural bridge over the river, which you cross (it is possible to descend into the canyon here, all the way down to the river bed). From the bridge the path continues along the river, and then, underneath the towering coloured rocks you arrive at another symbol of the national park: the famous medieval bridge, one of the best preserved in the area, at the very scenic other entrance of the canyon. From here through forest and pretty countryside you walk back to the little artificial lake of Remolino (and perhaps go for a swim) and then to Felitto. From here you can either be picked up, or choose to walk back the last stretch to your agriturismo.
Agriturismo *** Felitto – HB
Distance: 12 km. Approx. 4- 5 h. walking. Ascents and descents: ca. 300 m.

Day 3
You start the day with a short ride from Felitto to Laurino today. Already from far away you see this town towering high above the river. Just below the town, you start your walk, following the canyon underneath Laurino. After about 30 minutes walking, you arrive at a small medieval bridge which leads to the little church of Sant’Elena. From here a good mule track leads into the ‘real’ mountains, following the spectacular green Soprana valley. Through thick forests, you arrive at a beautiful mountain meadow, with some extensive grazing and ruins of houses. Shortly further on, you can discover one of the most interesting karst phenomena of the area: a whole river disappearing into the ground. The way back – again along ancient mule tracks – takes you along some of the most amazing viewpoints of the area. An optional visit brings you to the cave of St. Michael, with a statue of the Archangel. From here it’s an easy way down to the pretty little village of Valle dell’Angelo, where you sleep in a ‘locanda’, just above the village square. In the evening you eat in a renowned ‘Slow Food’ restaurant.
Country Inn in Valle dell’Angelo – HB
Distance: 15 km. Approx. 5-6 h. walking. Ascents and descents: ca. 500 m.

Optional extra day
Today you can first take some time to wander along the narrow medieval streets and drink a coffee in the town square, before walking off to close by Piaggine, the next village. From here you start the real walk, up into the mountain valleys underneath the sanctuary of Monte Vivo. You walk along dramatic canyons and past medieval bridges, before starting the climb along the old pilgrim’s path towards the little chapel. From the sanctuary you will have beautiful views over the whole area. The real walkers can continue to the summit of the Monte Vivo, before descending again to Piaggine along quiet little roads. Now take some time to look around in Piaggine, before you walk back to Valle dell’Angelo, where you spend one more night.
Country Inn in Valle dell’Angelo – HB
Distance: 12 km. Approx. 5 h. walking. Ascents and descents: ca. 400 m.

Day 4
From Valle dell’Angelo you start your walk in the direction of Piaggine again. But today, just before reaching the village, you descend into a pretty green valley, with maquis, olive groves and orchards, a timeless rural landscape. An age-old footpath brings us to the pretty little town of Sacco, of which the cathedral has to be visited! Along a medieval mule track you then descend to the ‘sources’ of the Sammaro river, which here comes to the surface, after having run underground for several kilometres. An ideal spot for a picnic lunch! The path then continues at the other side of the river and brings you to the ‘ghost town’ Roscigno Vecchia, also called the ‘Pompeii of the 19th century’. This little village, abandoned at the beginning of the 20th century, has remained unchanged since then. A beautiful setting, especially at sunset! From Roscigno Vecchia, you walk then up to the ‘new’ Roscigno, where you spend the next night.
Country Inn in Roscigno – HB
Distance: 14 km. Approx. 5 h. walking. Ascents and descents: ca. 400 m.

Day 5
Directly from your country inn, you continue your walk. From Roscigno you climb up to the Monte Pruno, an archaeological site, where you can admire the impressive stone walls from the 4th century BC a, number of tombs, as well as beautiful viewpoint over the whole area. From here you descend to the quaint little village of Corleto Monforte, as the name already says, a fortified mountain, with a pretty medieval town centre built on the promontory, overlooking the valley. Along a beautiful ancient mule track, along old watermills and through the olive groves, you then walk to Sant’Angelo a Fasanella, one of the most interesting little towns in the area. Here you have the time for a drink in the square and then walk the last 500 m. to your beautifully located agriturismo. You’ll enjoy dinner in the nice restaurant overlooking the whole valley.
Agriturismo *** Sant’Angelo a Fasanella – HB
Distance: 8-10 km. Approx. 4- 5 h. walking. Ascents and descents: ca. 350 m.

Day 6
Today you make a beautiful roundwalk. First you walk to the town centre of Sant’Angelo, and now take the time to visit the impressive church in the cave of St. Michael, certainly one of the most beautiful churches you’ve ever seen! Then you’ll walk down through the medieval streets to the river Fasanella. You then follow the river valley, along a medieval mule track, with remaining bits of the old Roman road, and shortly reach one of the most picturesque sites of the National Park: the so-called Risorgenza dell’Auso, where the river Auso comes to the light, after having run underground for several kilometres. The ruins of the medieval watermills and the bridge make the picture complete. From here you walk up to the church of Cardoneto and then along the ancient staircases to the nice little village of Ottati. Then you can choose to either walk or take the local bus back to Sant’Angelo. Or opt for an extra walk through the mountains. You’ll enjoy another night and another dinner in your beautiful agriturismo.
Agriturismo *** Sant’Angelo a Fasanella – HB
Distance: 8-10 km. Approx. 4- 5 h. walking. Ascents and descents: ca. 350 m.

Day 7
A short transfer brings you to the high plain of the Alburni Mountains, a wild calcareous mountain chain with many caves, huge beech forests and bare rocks, an area where wolves still wander around. You are brought to the beginning of the path which leads to the so-called ‘Antece’, a prehistoric stone warrior, sculpted in the bare rock. From here you walk along easy mule tracks through the high plains, along several sink holes. You reach the edge of the mountain plateau at one of the most impressive viewpoints of the area: ‘Il Figliolo’, a sheer drop of several hundreds of meters and a marvellous site to overlook the plain of Salerno, the sea and the mountains. Then through the beautiful beech forest, along ancient mule tracks you walk down to Petina, a nice little village, where you have time to wander through the old streets of the village centre, before transferring to Sicignano, where you stay in a nice agriturismo (transfer included).
Agriturismo *** Sicignano degli Alburni – HB
Distance: 16 km. Approx. 5 h. walking. Ascents: ca. 250 m. Descents: ca. 850 m.

Day 8
On this last walking day you will visit the north side of the Alburni Mountains. You walk through thick forests and nice countryside and wander through medieval villages. In Sicignano you walk up to the ruins of the castle, an impressive viewpoint. One of the other villages has been completely abandoned, and now is a ghost town with dramatic views over the plain. For those who want there is the possibility to walk up into the ‘real’ mountains, with various (strenuous) walks to be done.
Agriturismo *** Sicignano degli Alburni – HB
Several possible options: 2 – 8 hours walking. Ascents and descents: from 200 – 600 m.

Day 9
Unless you have booked an extension, the tour finishes after breakfast. You are brought to the train or bus station (transfer included), for you return to Salerno, Naples (airport) or Rome. An extra night in any hotel can be booked upon request, as well as an extra night in Naples, Salerno and/or the Cilento/Amalfi Coast.

ACCOMMODATION & MEALS

All nights are spent in beautiful, welcoming farm houses (‘agriturismo’), or in so-called ‘locanda’ (the French ‘Auberge’, or British ‘Inn’), all small characteristic family-run accommodations. All rooms have en-suite facilities.

Accommodation is on half board basis, in all accommodations. So all evening meals are included; either on the premises of the hotel or ‘agriturismo’ or in a nearby restaurant.

No picnic lunches are included in the tour price, but these can be prepared for you by the accommodation holders, or materials for picnics can be purchased in the villages where you stay. On some occasions you have the option to have your lunch in a restaurant along the way.

Nights 1 & 2: The first nights are spent in Felitto in a very good ‘agriturismo’, just outside the medieval village, in a beautiful green valley. Food is known to be very good and the farm produces its own full-bodied red wine.

Night 3 : The next accommodation is a newly opened, completely restored ‘guesthouse’ right in the village square, overlooking the mountains. Dinner will be in a renowned ‘Slow Food’ restaurant, on the same square.

Night 4 : Tonight is spent in a recently opened guesthouse, right in the old centre of Roscigno. Dinner is at a close by restaurant. In alternative you can stay in a comfortable agriturismo, where dinner is served on the spot.

Night 5 & 6: These nights are spent in a comfortable ‘agriturismo’, beautifully located, just outside the little town of Sant’Angelo a Fasanella, at the south side of the Alburni Mountains, a recently restored beautiful farm house with swimming pool and good restaurant.

Night 7 & 8: The last nights are again spent in a nice ‘agriturismo’, just outside the little town of Sicignano, underneath the towering Alburni Mountains.

LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY

Moderately easy (level 2-3):Mostly moderately easy walks, but with nonetheless some walking uphill, sometimes on paths with rough surfaces. Orientation can be difficult on occasions (but check out our route notes!). On some days extensions or shortcuts are possible.

Fitness: High standard of fitness is not necessary but you should be able to walk for up to 5-6 hours, sometimes also on a day in hot sun on dusty or stony tracks.

FOOT PATHS & WAYMARKING

Most paths are relatively well maintained, but during the season some paths can get overgrown (we are in continuous contact with local authorities to keep the paths clean – please help us by providing you feedback on the quality of the paths).

Waymarking: Only a small part of the route is waymarked (partly by us); elsewhere it is necessary to follow the route descriptions provided together with the maps. With these it is always possible to find your route. In case you don’t feel confident a local guide can be provided for some trails.

ON OUR INDIVIDUAL ‘SELF-GUIDED’ WALKING TOURS WE PROVIDE YOU WITH :

• Extensive route notes, with description of the route & tourist information
• Maps at 1 : 25.000 scale
• 24/24 h local assistance
• Luggage transport between the accommodations
• Private transfers as specified

ARRIVAL & DEPARTURE

Arrival: The tour starts in MAGLIANO; a pick-up service (included) has been arranged from Capaccio train station, which is easily reached from Naples, the nearest city with an international airport. The train ride takes about an hour. Another possibility is to arrange a pick-up service (included) from Roccadaspide, a nice little town with beautiful medieval castle, connected with Capaccio train station by a frequent bus service.

Departure: The tour ends after breakfast on day 11 in Sicignano. A short transfer brings you to the train station (included), from where you travel to your next destination (Naples, Salerno or Rome can all be easily reached). Several taxi services are available to bring you directly to your next destination.

EXTRA NIGHTS

It is possible to include extra nights in any of the accommodations en route.

At the beginning or the end of the tour there is also an opportunity to visit Paestum or Pompeii, or spend some time on the beach. The tour can easily be combined with a possible journey along the coast of the Cilento or with a tour on the Amalfi Coast. As well is it possible to extend your tour with a few days along the Amalfi Coast.
The cities of Salerno and Naples (or the isle of Capri) can also be visited as an extension of the tour. Several good accommodations are available. Details & prices on request.

SHORTER & LONGER VERSIONS

A longer, 11-day version of this tour is also available, as well 7-, 8-, 10, and 12-day versions. On request we can organise a ‘continuous walking route’, with a change in accommodation every day.

Day 1
Arrival by train in Capaccio / Paestum (which can easily be reached from Naples). You can visit the amazing Greek temples, before being transferred to your accommodation in the quaint village of Magliano (transfer service included). Those who come by car can leave their car here (a transfer service from the last accommodation back to here can be arranged).
Agriturismo or B&B *** Magliano – HB

Day 2
Today you make a circular walk, a good introduction of what the area has to offer: ranging from wild nature to hidden cultural treasures. From the small hamlet of Capizzo you first walk up to along the medieval stairs to the chapel of San Mauro, just underneath the impressive mountain ridge overlooking the Gulf of Salerno and the Amalfi coast. After a visit to the chapel, with beautiful fresco’s – and of course great views ! – you make a short climb to the ridge, to have even better views, ranging from Capri & the Amalfi Coast to inland Cilento. Then you follow a very scenic path, first through the forest and then over the ridge to the chapel of Santa Lucia, yet another beautiful medieval church. From here you follow the old pilgrim’s way down to the town centre of Magliano Vetere (‘Old Magliano’), and perhaps have a drink in the local bar, before returning to your accommodation.
Agriturismo or B&B *** Magliano – HB

Day 3
First you walk up to Magliano Nuovo, an old fortified town, towering high above the green canyon of the river Calore. From here you have one of the most amazing views over one of the highlights of the Cilento National Park: the canyon of the Calore River. An old path leads down to the river from here. First you walk through the maquis, then through the forest, into one of the most unspoilt areas of the Cilento National Park. Vegetation is abundant and in the crystal clear water there are still otters and trout. Along the route there are several nice swimming spots. Then you arrive at a natural bridge over the river, which you cross (it is possible to descend into the canyon here, all the way down to the river bed). From the bridge an easy path leads to a little artificial lake (with picnic spot & the opportunity for a swim). Then along an ancient aqueduct you walk into another gorge, below the little medieval town of Felitto. After crossing a little bridge a path leads up to the town square. From here you can either be picked up, or choose to walk the last stretch to your great agriturismo.
Agriturismo *** Felitto – HB

Day 4
Today you descend again into the amazing gorge of the Calore River, right from the town square of Felitto. The beautiful path along the old aqueduct first brings you to a picnic area at a small artificial lake, and then penetrates into the wildest part of the canyon. The path has several amazing viewpoints overlooking the canyon. You come along caves (in one of which a hermit used to live) and the ruins of watermills. Underneath the towering coloured rocks you arrive at the famous medieval bridge, one of the best preserved in the area, at the very scenic other entrance of the canyon. From here through forest and pretty countryside you walk back to Felitto.
Agriturismo *** Felitto – HB
Distance: 12 km. Approx. 4- 5 h. walking. Ascents and descents: ca. 300 m.

Day 5
You start the day with a short ride from Felitto to Laurino today.

Day 6
From Valle dell’Angelo you start your walk in the direction of Piaggine again.

Day 7
Directly from your country inn, you continue your walk. From Roscigno you climb up to the Monte Pruno, an archaeological site, where you can admire the impressive stone walls from the 4th century BC a, number of tombs, as well as beautiful viewpoint over the whole area. From here you descend to the quaint little village of Corleto Monforte, as the name already says, a fortified mountain, with a pretty medieval town centre built on thre promontory, overlooking the valley.

Day 8
Today you make a beautiful roundwalk.

Day 9
A short transfer brings you to the high plain of the Alburni Mountains, a wild calcareous mountain chain with many caves, huge beech forests and bare rocks, an area where wolves still wander around.

Day 10
On this last walking day you will visit the north side of the Alburni Mountains.

Day 11
Unless you have booked an extension, the tour finishes after breakfast. You are brought to the train or bus station (transfer included), for you return to Salerno, Naples (airport) or Rome. An extra night in any hotel can be booked upon request, as well as an extra night in Naples, Salerno and/or the Cilento/Amalfi Coast.

Overview

Through the hill towns of Umbria along the ancient pathways of St. Francis
Spoleto, Valnerina, Norcia, Trevi, Spello & Assisi

Italy has a ‘Green Heart’, where it is a real pleasure to walk through the lovely countryside.

Not as famous as the Tuscan landscape, but perhaps more genuine and at least equally beautiful ! You walk from village to village, a full immersion in the mythical Umbrian landscape. At first through forests and vineyards, then through the rolling hills between the spectacular hilltop towns of Trevi, Spello and Assisi.

A short detour is made to the wonderful high plain of Castelluccio, near Norcia, with its extensive meadows, fields of wheat and wild flowers. Walking here in Spring is an unforgettable experience!

Moreover Umbria is a land full of cultural treasures, ranging from the world famous Assisi, with its impressive basilica dedicated to St. Francis, to lesser known small medieval towns like Trevi, Spello and Norcia, and of course the wonderful Roman town of Spoleto. You have of course ample time to visit these historic towns and of course also the many beautiful medieval monasteries along the pilgrim’s roads. For two nights you stay in one of the most beautiful monasteries.

However the emphasis of the tour is to enjoy the countryside, the rolling vineyards, poppies in spring and the wild cyclamen in autumn. Most of all, many of the views have changed little for hundreds of years. Eastern Umbria is still an area where you feel the genuine heart of Italy. You’ll walk at an easy pace from highlight to highlight, taking in the best of Central Italy.

Our tour finishes in the city of Assisi, but can easily be extended with a day or more in Perugia, the region’s capital city, a beautiful and lively cultural capital.

This is a moderately easy tour which is suitable for those who have some experience with walking and a good general physical condition. Through the extensive footpath network of the area, roughly following the traces of the medieval pilgrims’ path from Assisi to Rome and the Roman Via Flaminia, one of Europe’s most important ‘high ways’ in Roman times.

Day-to-Day

Day 1
Arrival by train in Spoleto and transfer to the hotel (either by private taxi or public transport). Your hotel is located in the heart of the old town, known for its beautiful churches and many Roman monuments. And also a very pleasant city to go for an afternoon walk or evening stroll. According to your arrival time, you can go for a short visit to the town centre. In the evening you eat at the restaurant of the hotel. The famous ‘Ponte delle Torri’ is a marvel illuminated at night!
Accommodation: Hotel Clitunno – Spoleto.
Total walking time: around 1 hour + sightseeing time.

Day 2
The first day walk takes you at first through the whole historical town centre of Spoleto and to its fortress. Then you walk across the impressive ‘Ponte delle Torri’ bridge, a unique aqueduct, to the other side of the valley, onto the hill of Monteluco. Here you make a very pleasant roundwalk through the forested hills, with wonderful views on Spoleto and its surroundings. The hill of Monteluco is known to be a ‘holy mountain’ and many of the trails are linked to the spiritual history of the area. Here you can discover the ‘holy forest’ with its many grottoes and wander along medieval chapels through a pleasant wooden landscape.. Then you descend back into the valley of Spoleto again, and along the medieval chapel of San Pietro you return to the old town.
Accommodation: Hotel Clitunno – Spoleto.
Total walking time: around 4 hours + sightseeing time (5 hours with extra option).

Day 3
After breakfast you begin your long walk, which will bring you into the Valnerina, the wonderful valley of the Nera river. First you cross the Ponte delle Torri again, but now you follow the beautiful path along the acqueduct, with great views on Spoleto. Then you follow the waymarked trail into the small valley of the Val Cieca, the ‘blind valley’, uphill until you reach the Castelmonte pass. From here it goes downhill again and in the early afternoon you reach the small hamlet of Cese. Continue the walk through the forested hills and towards the end of the afternoon you reach the beautiful Abbey of San Pietro in Valle, now a historical country residence. Here you’ll stay for the next two nights. At night you have a good meal directly here at the restaurant of the abbey.
Accommodation: Hotel Abbazia San Pietro in Valle – Ferentillo.
Total walking time: around 6 hours (circa 2 h. less if you opt for a transfer).

Day 4
Today you leave the abbey, heading towards the West. You now walk through the narrowest part of the Nera valley, which until not long ago was almost completely cut off from the outer world and therefore virtually untouched. Along several charming hamlets, following the pilgrim’s trail from Assisi to Rome, you reach one of the wonders of central Italy: the Marmore waterfalls. These waterfalls, about 165 metres high offer a unique visual and acoustic experience. And the most intriguing fact about them is that they were actually manmade in Roman times… You can make a wonderful roundwalk in the area, walking from viewpoint to viewpoint. After some time for contemplation or a drink at the waterfalls, you return either by bus or private taxi to your base at the abbey.
Accommodation: Hotel Abbazia San Pietro in Valle – Ferentillo.
Total walking time: around 5 hours + sightseeing time.

Day 5
In the morning you are being picked up by your private taxi for a transfer to the wonderful small village of Preci. From here a beautiful route leads up to the majestic Abbey of San Eutizio, one of the most beautiful of the region. From there you then follow yet another medieval muletrack which first ascends steadily on the hillside, with great views over the valley below. Once gained the Ancarano pass, the views open over the plain of Norcia and a beautiful descend brings you straight to the town walls of this wonderful small town, birthplace of St. Benedict.
Accommodation: Hotel Grotta Azzurra – Norcia.
Total walking time: around 3,5 hours + sightseeing time (5,5 hours with extra option).

Day 6
Today you make a wonderful roundwalk into the heart of the Sibillini mountains, starting directly from Norcia. You walk partly through forested areas, partly through a pretty rural landscape. Then you walk a stretch along the ridge, with great views over Norcia and the Piano Grande (‘Great Plain’), with its meadows full of wildflowers, always spectacular, but especially in Spring. Your path leads you to the tiny village of Castelluccio, overlooking the Piano Grande. Then you descend back to Norcia, along an equally beautiful path. To shorten the walk, you can also opt for a transfer to gain some height.
Accommodation: Hotel Grotta Azzurra – Norcia.
Total walking time: around 3,5 hours + sightseeing time (5,5 hours with extra option).

Day 7
Today you first make a short transfer either to Poreta or to Bazzano Superiore, in case you wish to make a slightly longer walk. From one of these places you start your walk in northern direction, again along the medieval trails that link Assisi to Rome. Depending on the walk you wish to make (more or less up&downs) you can opt for a route through the hills, scattered with remains of medieval castles and walled hamlets, or descend into the valley and discover the mythical springs of the Clitunno river, believed to be divine waters in Roman times. Your goal for today is the beautiful small town of Trevi, one of the most charming villages of central Italy, overlooking the Valle Umbra and moreover famous for its crystal clear spring water. Here you settle in your hotel for the night. You settle in one of the quiet, comfortable rooms. In the evening you can dine in one the nearby restaurants in the old town centre or directly at your hotel.
Accommodation: Hotel ***/**** – Trevi.
Total walking time: around 4,5 hours + sightseeing time (6 hours with extra option).

Day 8
From Trevi you’ll have a short transfer to the old Roman town of Spello, according to many one of the most charming villages in the area. Take your time to drink a coffee here and then walk uphill, all the way through the old town centre, located on a ridge. After having passed the medieval town walls, the ridge continues and you continue your walk uphill, now through the olive groves. According to your energy level you can opt for either the walk over the ridge of the Monte Subasio, or (recommended) stay at a lower level and walk through pleasant countryside, with great views over the valley and the city of Assisi, yet another highlight of this tour and the goal for today. In the afternoon you reach the Eremo delle Carceri, the place where St. Francis, and after him many others, sought spiritual relief, now a beautiful small monastery with nice surrounding garden. From here you have the possibility to either continue the walk all the way down or take the bus to downtown Assisi, where you will stay the last two nights.
Accommodation: Hotel *** – Assisi.
Total walking time: around 6 hours + sightseeing time (longer option: + 1,5 – 2,5 hours).

Day 9
After breakfast you can take your time to explore the city. The city is full of highlights, among which of course, the Basilica of San Francesco d’Assisi (St. Francis), with its wonderful fresco’s by Giotto, a World Heritage Site. But also the other churches, the Greek temple of the central square and the underground Roman Forum are worth a visit. For those who want to do another short walk to conclude their walking holiday in style it is recommended to take the bus to the Eremo delle Carceri and from there undertake the ascent of Mt. Subasio. Here a beautiful roundwalk along natural springs and small chapels can be made, before re-descending to the historical heart of Assisi, for the last supper in Umbria.
Accommodation: Hotel *** – Assisi.
Total walking time: around 3,5 hours + sightseeing time (5,5 hours with extra option).

Day 10
End of the tour. From Assisi centre there are buses to the train station, from where there are regular trains to Rome and Florence.

Overview

Through the hill towns of Umbria along the ancient pathways of St. Francis
Spoleto, Valnerina, Trevi, Spello & Assisi

Italy has a ‘Green Heart’, where it is a real pleasure to walk through the lovely countryside.

Not as famous as the Tuscan landscape, but perhaps more genuine and at least equally beautiful! You walk from village to village, a full immersion in the mythical Umbrian landscape. At first through forests and vineyards, then through the rolling hills, between the spectacular hilltop towns of Trevi, Spello and Assisi.

Moreover Umbria is a land full of cultural treasures, ranging from the world famous Assisi, with its impressive basilica dedicated to St. Francis, to lesser known small medieval towns like Trevi, Spello and of course the wonderful Roman town of Spoleto.

Day 5
Today you first make a short transfer either to Poreta or to Bazzano Superiore, in case you wish to make a slightly longer walk.

Day 6
From Trevi you’ll have a short transfer to the old Roman town of Spello, according to many one of the most charming villages in the area.

Day 7
After breakfast you can take your time to explore the city.

Day 8
End of the tour. From Assisi centre there are buses to the train station, from where there are regular trains to Rome and Florence.

Moderately easy (2): Mostly easy walks, but with nonetheless some walking uphill, sometimes on paths with rough surfaces. On some days some stretches are difficult for those suffering from vertigo (but NOT dangerous !). On these days alternative options are available. Extensions or shortcuts are also possible on many days.

Fitness: High standard of fitness is not necessary but you should be able to walk for up to 5 hours a day in hot sun on dusty or stony tracks.

FOOT PATHS & WAYMARKING

Most paths are well maintained, but during the season some paths can get overgrown (we are in continuous contact with local authorities to keep the paths clean – please help us by providing you feedback on the quality of the paths). Both on Procida and on Capri, many parts of the route that you follow are paved (pedestrian) alleyways.

Waymarking: A large part of the route is waymarked – with different marks, explained in the route notes. Elsewhere it is necessary to follow the route descriptions provided together with the maps. With these it is always possible to find your route. Most paths are well maintained, but the journey involves some walking uphill, sometimes on paths with rough surfaces. The paths around Norcia – especially around the Piano Grande – can have some snow during early Spring and late Autumn.

ON INDIVIDUAL SELF-GUIDED WALKING TOURS WE PROVIDE YOU WITH :

• Maps at 1 : 25.000 scale (or better)
